The BRC (Basic RiderCourse) is the alternative to the DMV road-test.
Basic Rider Course (BRC) is an introductory course intended for a new rider with little or no experience (although some veteran riders have found that they learned more than expected). Motorcycles are provided for on-cycle training. Pre-approved participants are welcome to use their own street legal motorcycle/scooters (250cc or under) during the course. Graduates passing a written test and riding evaluation receive a NY DMV road test waiver .
The ERC (Experenced RiderCourse) is for riders with 1000+ miles experence.
Experienced Rider Course (ERC) is intended for licensed riders with a minimum of 1 year and 1000 miles riding experience. Students use their own street legal motorcycle/scooter
These courses were developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. They address issues raised from studying motorcycle crashes and identifying skills absent in the operators of the motorcycles. Safety is the key factor. Find out more about the study in the Hurt Report (pdf 40 kb).
